When Should a Child First Visit the Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should receive their first orthodontic screening by the age of 7. This early visit allows us to assess whether orthodontic treatment will be needed and when it should begin.
Additionally, many local dentists are trained to identify orthodontic issues early and may refer patients to our office before the age of 7.
Why Evaluate Children at an Early Age?
Early diagnosis and treatment can guide the alignment of erupting teeth, preserve space for permanent teeth, and decrease the risk of damage to protruding front teeth.
If early treatment is needed, Dr. Schiro and Dr. Mazurek can influence the growth of the jaw and the positioning of incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also:
- Regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches
- Create space for permanent teeth
- Reduce the need for permanent tooth extractions
- Minimize the risk of impacted permanent teeth
- Correct habits such as thumb sucking
- Address abnormal swallowing or speech issues
Early treatment can simplify the process when the remaining permanent teeth come in.
Does Early Treatment Benefit All Children?
Not all children will benefit from early treatment. Some orthodontic problems are more effectively corrected during the teenage years when all permanent teeth have erupted.
Certain skeletal orthodontic issues are best addressed when growth is more advanced or completed. Dr. Schiro develops a personalized treatment plan based on each child’s specific needs. If treatment isn’t necessary right away, the child will be placed in our Orthodontic Supervisory Program.
What is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?
The Orthodontic Supervisory Program is meant for children who are not yet ready for immediate treatment. This program enables us to monitor the eruption of their permanent teeth and intervene early if needed to prevent more complex issues later on.
We usually schedule appointments for these patients every 4-6 months to monitor their progress. Participation in this program is free, and it helps us determine the best time to start treatment for the most favorable results.
Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
Beyond creating a beautiful smile, braces can:
- Improve bite function
- Enhance the ability to clean teeth effectively
- Prevent excessive wear on teeth
- Increase the longevity of natural teeth
Does Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces in Adolescence?
It’s also important to note that early orthodontic treatment can address significant issues, prevent more serious problems, and make future treatment easier. However, because not all permanent teeth have come in during early treatment, complete alignment may not be achieved.
Typically, a shorter phase of comprehensive treatment (Phase II – full braces) is needed during the teenage years to finish the correction. In some cases, additional treatment may not be needed.
Should We Continue Seeing Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes, regular dental visits are crucial. Patients with braces or other orthodontic appliances must maintain excellent oral hygiene to keep their teeth and gums healthy. We recommend visiting your family dentist for check-ups and cleanings every 6 months during orthodontic treatment.
